6 Things Women With Gorgeous Skin Do Every Day

Women with smooth, radiant skin aren't just lucky. They tend to have six daily habits in common.

1. They cleanse gently, once a day.

Unless you have oily skin, you only need to wash your face in the evening, with a creamy cleanser and lukewarm water. Give the cleanser time to work. "Instead of scrubbing your face, let the cleanser sit on your skin for several seconds and break down the makeup, dirt, and oil," says Boston dermatologist Ranella Hirsch, MD. In the morning, simply splash your face with lukewarm water. (If you're oily, use a gentle foaming cleanser morning and evening.)

2. They reapply sunscreen.

You know that the number one way to prevent skin aging is to apply sunscreen, so of course you already use a morning moisturizer with an SPF of (at least) 30. What women with gorgeous skin also do: Reapply sunscreen every few hours. Sun-shielding ingredients are only effective for about two hours—long enough to protect your skin on a morning walk or commute but not throughout the afternoon. New York City dermatologist Heidi Waldorf, MD, keeps Colorescience Sunforgettable Mineral Powder Brush SPF 30 ($50, Colorescience.com) in her bag because it's easy to brush on over makeup (and on the back of her hands or décolletage) throughout the day.

3. They use a retinoid cream every night.

"The first time I meet someone, I immediately know if she's using a retinoid because her skin is glowy and smooth," says Miami dermatologist Leslie Baumann, MD. Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that have been proven to boost collagen, which reduces fine lines, and to speed cell turnover, which evens out discoloration. Retinoids are available over-the-counter (as retinol) or with a prescription (as tretinoin, adapalene, and tazarotene). Because retinoids can cause some irritation at first, Hirsch recommends applying a gentle moisturizer, letting it soak in for at least 30 minutes, then applying your retinoid cream.

4. They eat salmon, and consume lots of antioxidants.

Salmon's high omega-3 content helps hydrate skin from the inside out and reduce the inflammation that can cause skin redness, says Baumann. And antioxidant-rich foods and drinks—blueberries, dark greens, green tea and coffee—help fight free radicals that can damage the cellular structures of the skin, accelerating skin aging.

5. They break a sweat.

Raising your heart rate once a day makes your skin glow. Because exercise improves your circulation and oxygen capacity, it improves your complexion. "And we know that the skin has endorphin receptors, which may also explain why it is positively impacted by aerobic exercise," says Baumann.

6. They sleep at least 7 hours a night.

Cortisol, the stress hormone, ages the skin and can cause acne. Sleep reduces the cortisol level in your body. So it's a simple equation: Sleep = younger, clearer skin.

6 Makeup Hacks That Make You Look Younger

1. The Problem: Uneven Skin Tone

Solutions:
To address Valerie's uneven skin tone at age 30, I used a generous amount of upper- and under-eye brighteners and BB cream to correct and enhance. I then restored healthy coloring with bronzer and blush. I also filled in her lash line with gel liner and used mascara and a brow pencil to define her eye area.

2. The Problem: Under-Eye Darkness, Symmetry
Solutions: For under-eye darkness, I applied an orange-based corrector to Amanda's darkest area, right under the lower lash line. Then I generously applied under-eye brightener in the Triangle of Light. I finished with an extra layer of brightener in the hollow indentation under her eyes. Amanda also wanted more symmetrical features. The addition of foundation over her nose and mouth corrected shadowing, which allowed her face to look more balanced. Lip liner helped correct the asymmetry in her lips.

3. The Problem: Complexion and Coloring, Thin Lashes and Brows
Solutions: After smoothing out and warming Selina's skin tone with foundation, I focused on defining her lashes and brows. I lined between her lashes with a gel pencil, traced her upper and lower lash lines with eye definer, applied mascara, and finished with false lashes. I used a brow pencil and brow mascara to fill in sparseness and build onto her natural eyebrows. Most of Selina's makeup time will be spent on defining these features to achieve her most confident look.

4. The Problem: Uneven Skin, Lack of Eye Definition
Solutions: To allow the beauty of Cherie's facial structure to come out, I had to correct her skin tone. I applied under-eye brightener in the Triangle of Light, chose a full-coverage foundation, and then spent time lightening up and lifting her face using bronzer, highlight, and blush. Cherie has petite eyelids, so I relied on liner, mascara, and false lashes to open her eyes with just the right amount of precise definition.

5. The Problem: Loss of Firmness and Definition
Solutions: To rejuvenate Lisa's face, I focused on using corrector under her foundation to lift and brighten expression lines, as well as the nasolabial folds around her mouth. I used bronzer, highlight, and blush to articulate her cheek structure, which made a tremendous difference. False lashes, a brow pencil, and brow mascara were the keys to correcting her thin lashes and over-plucked eyebrows.

6. The Problem: Drooping Eyelids, Loss of Lip Volume
Solutions: Chris has gorgeous full cheeks, but she has lost elasticity around her eyes and volume in her lips. Upper-eye brightener brought back her lids, while liner and mascara gave her long but colorless lashes a dramatic lift. Lip liner redefined her lips, while a lip-perfecting balm and light-reflective gloss filled in crinkles and created the illusion of fuller lips.
